Fertilizing & Weed Killing Naturally

As you may notice in my barrel growing section, I use compost and cow manure to fertilize. Commercial fertilizers are so expensive! Some can run you upwards of $30 bucks. Yikes! And, many fertilizers are not safe for children to be around. There are many organic and natural fertilizers out there like kelp, bone meal, cottonseed meal, blood meal and fish emulsion, to name a few.  But, I like to try to be a natural as possible BUT save a buck or two. So, I choose to use a fertilizer that was safe for my munchkin to be around and that supports my plants. So, I chose to fertilize with cow manure and homemade compost.

If you live near a farm or can drive to one, you can buy cow manure from them. If you do not know of any farms, look on craigslist. Sometimes farmers will advertise their cow manure for sale and will list the price. If not, you can email them and ask for a price quote. Also, you can buy petrified cow manure compost from your local garden center. So, get your cow manure from:

  • A local farm
  • Craigslist.org to find a local farm
  • Cow manure compost sold at garden center

So, I mix the cow manure into my soil. And, I add some of my homemade compost. My homemade compost has many of my table scraps like potato peels, egg shells, orange peels, banana peels, coffee grinds, you get the point. (See Simple Composting)

On to weed killing, I have to weed my veggie garden. I hate weeding. But, I have to do it. But, for other weeds, like the ones that pop up in my patio and other random cracks in stones and concrete, I put a little 5% vinegar on them. Vinegar kills everything including weeds. I would not try to use vinegar to kill weeds in your lawn or your garden. It just may take a few other things out too!

Great post! I didn’t know about the vinegar, that is very good to know.

For your garden weeds : Although it is too late this year with the growing season under way, may I suggest one of my own blog post on preparing your gaden for the chemical-free fight against weeds as reference for next year.

Hope you like it and that it is useful to you!

These are some great tips. I always try eco friendly methods for weed killing, including vinegar. But you’re right - you do have to be careful!
