Barrel Growing & More
If you live in an apartment and still want to grow some veggies or flowers you can try growing them in a barrel or a can. I am growing onions in a barrel in my backyard. I cannot report on their progress right now. They are still seeds. I also use cans and barrels to make container gardens. One type of container garden I am going to do this year is an aromatherapy container garden. I am going to put lavender, sage and a few herbs in the barrel and place it near one of my outdoor chairs. So, anytime I need a little break I can go out there and relax and take in the great scents. Also, I am going to grow a few herb plants in decorated coffee cans and smaller cans around my house.
So, here is the formula I use for the soil of the container:
1/3 compost
1/3 petrified cow manure
1/3 garden soil
I use the compost from my backyard. I purchase the cow manure from my local garden center. I spend about $1.50 per bag. And, that bag lasts quite a while for me. You would think that it has a horrific smell but it goes away quite quickly! The garden soil I use purchase from my local garden center also. But, if you have a tighter budget you can use dirt from your backyard. I have done that before but the dirt from your backyard may be high is certain nutrients and low in others. So certain plants may thrive while others no not. Try it and tell me how it goes!
